Broadcast Power
As I watched the AVPs that tackled the growth of Philippine Television and Radio, I was amazed. At some parts, I was literally 'laughing out loud' especially when I saw actresses like Ate Guy at a very young age, singing and dancing while wearing 'so baduy' clothes and the screen names they used at that time, catchy indeed. ;p
Media has gone through a lot. I've been saying this for quite a number of times in my previous entries, especially in the entry about the Information Revolutions. I thought that after the whole process - beginning from clay tablets evolving to the Television sets, it would simply end there - I was wrong. The box with sound coming out of it and the box with moving pictures also evolved through time, not only with it's physical features like its size, quality, etc. Moreover, it's content also evolved.
What media shows, the substance always has a purpose. Through time, TV and Radio - as the two major sources of information and greatest medium of media were used for different reasons. At a certain point in time, they were used for a political use especially during the Martial Law -although it's primary purpose is to inform and entertain. Marcos used the power of media to his advantage. Now, Media exists for the same purpose - to inform and entertain. Media would always dance to the beat and adjust to the taste of its audience. Both TV and Radio's content change to cater the wants and needs of its target audience.
Although, broadcast media's purpose is to inform and entertain - there's another side of it that's somewhat, negative. Though its purpose is for the good of all, of course, the people behind it would also think of themselves. How would they benefit from all this?
Advertising - showing commercials, endorsing products that we don't really need. Creating standards of beauty, mentalities and inculcating immoral values. What we see in Television, is what we think is cool, is 'in'. What our 'idols' wear - that's what we want and what we think is beautiful. Media set a certain standard of beauty, only the slim and the white are beautiful. (NOT!)
Youth choose to listen to the radio than to hear stories from the oldies. The youth choose to watch TV than to read a book. Starting at a young age, young minds are poisoned by media. Media molds their being by setting standards, changing their beliefs and incorporating values from what media shows. Unguarded information are made known to kids whenever the change channels. They believe in whatever they see, and want what's advertised on TV. Families are divided and more time is spent watching TV or listening to the radio rather than enjoying quality time. Media became a strong competitor when it comes to attracting one's attention, because kids would choose the tv than their own parents.
Truly, through evolution of the box with sound coming from it and the box with moving pictures. Through the evolution of it's content, media has proven its POWER.

END of My Shameless Plugging
Way back senior year, I belonged to the Research Elective class. Our final requirement for the subject was to create a class magazine and only ten people out of 40 plus students in our class working on it. We thought it was easy and we didn't take it seriously at first so we ended up in tears. We tried to finish it through an overnight session, but we didn't make it. It was totally depressing, after all your hardwork and all the sleepless nights devoted doing it - added up to shame because we were the only class that was not able to pass. We were heartbroken, not only because of our grades on the line but we were so ashamed to our classmates who even bothered to help us. Good thing, our teacher finally had the heart and gave us another chance. Though our magazine was good enough or even better than the others, ours was never displayed and was graded with a low grade for being late. :(
Well, I had an experience creating a magazine and that's when I learned that it wasn't easy, not at all. Although it seems so easy whenever you browse a magazine, think AGAIN. A year later, now, I am in college - a first year student of the third section of Communication Arts, attending the CA 101 class with a dreadful requirement - A CLASS MAGAZINE.
When 1CA3 heard this from our Professor, Ma'am Faye. All were excited, everyone suddenly got busy talking non - stop, brainstorming and the like. Yes, like everyone else I was also excited, knowing that it's another unforgettable experience with my classmates. But I was quiet, because I knew that it wasn't going to be easy.
And I was correct. Yes, I trust my new classmates, of course, we are Communication Arts students. Creating magazines would be one of our future jobs, we have the brightest ideas and creative skills - this job is a piece of cake! ;p Hell no! I guess all of us viewed this project in the same perpespective, and so, we didn't take it 'that' seriously. Well, we did but... err.
The process was fun at first. For me, it was! TOTALLY! :D
I belonged to the Art Department, with my dear friend Margo as head. We were quite confused what our job was since there was also a different department assigned for Lay - outing, what are supposed to do? Later on, we were assigned to take charge of the photos for the Mag. Who was so excited? ME! :D
I so love pictorials! :) Although we were taking it seriously, preparing the costumes, selecting the models, etc. We exerted much effort but still, we had fun. Our first shoot was a Saturday. I was sleepless due to a previous night gimmick and we also had a pictorial for the beauty section of the mag the day before. The following day, I went to UST - I was late, but I was the one who brought the stuff they forgot, I brought extra clothes and props. And I was the one in charge of fixing their hair. And yeah, I had my shots taken as well. BUBBLY:) The next shoot was a Tuesday after our 7pm class because these shoots were supposed to be taken at night. It was tiring but fun. As always, I was again in charge of the hair. My pictures from the previous pictorial were 'not good enough?', so we had to re-take that night. I was a professional (haha) and took my 'bubbliness' to the highest level. I was literally lying on the grass and was scratching non - stop after wards because I had allergies. "I'm itchy, scratch me!" ;p It took us a number of days to finally complete the pictures but only a few were selected for the final lay - out of the mag. (quite depressing, after all the hard work) Margo and I were chatting almost every morning before we go to school, critisizing the edited version of the pictures and deciding which ones that needs more editing, re-take, etc.
If you view my multiply,
http://lollipot.multiply.com . There, you can view the shots taken in between the pictorials. And if you read the album description, you can see that I was shamelessy plugging our magazine and used the 'behind the scenes' pictures as teasers. ;p Btw, I wasn't allowed by Margo to post the actual pictures before the Magazine release and we kept the pictures to our eyes only, not even to our classmates. (top secret, SURPRISE! ;p)
Almost all events involving pictures in the Mag, I was there and Margo, too! (haha magkapatid na nga kami eh! ;p) From the Julius Babao interview, where Margo, Ean and I formed the JFC (Julius Babao Fans Club) and had a picture with Aga Muhlach! :P To our beauty section pictorial (Kat's article), we ended up at Body Shop gateway and watching the last full show of 1408 and Kat & Gladys sleeping at my house. To the two-day shoot at UST. Editing & bonding sessions here at my house and our YM sessions. Truly unforgettable, priceless memories. I was absent during the last one, though. The final overnight editing at Meryll's house. ;( *sigh*
Finally, seeing the finished product, holding an actual copy of our hard work - such an amazing feeling. I'm still proud of what we've done and the fact that we were able to pass on time. Another memorable magazine experience. And yeah, SOLD OUT, baby! :D
An overflowing bank of the brightest ideas of great young minds + much effort, hard work, bloodshed & sleepless nights of 50 students + unlimited supply of creativity, talents and abilities =
the perfect mixture of TAHO,
not your ordinary flavour. :)

War of the Worlds
Placing myself in the shoes of one of the listeners during that time, I would've also believed in what I heard. Hearing a breaking news interrupting 'the usual' orchestra performances aired on radio would really catch my attention and get my ear glued to the speakers of my radio for further information. Like the many bothered others at that time, I'll try as much to keep track of what's happening around me and I would want to hear more to know more. With scientists talking, with residents who actually viewed what happened describing what they saw, with military officers warning us - all seemed to be true, factual and reliable. There's no TV to actually show me the real event, but their voices, what they said were the vital information that I rely on for me to know whether I'm in danger or whatsover. It is through what the radio reports that we are able to know what's happening around us, it's our only connection and source of information in our community - of course, I would certainly believe in what I just heard. At that point in time, who would not?One big factor at the time that they took as an advantage was that, it was
only on radio. To some who are really keen, would stick with the saying "to see is to believe". But who would bother to actually go out at a time of danger just to see whether the aliens were really there or not? Of course, people would stay in their own homes that they believe are safe and get attached to their radios wanting to get updated on what's happening.
At a time when radio is the only source of reliable information and Television was not yet invented, people would really believe in such and expect that whatever the media reports, what they hear to be true. Although there are chances of alterations like this, the possibilities that people behind radio broadcasting would do such a thing and deceive people are very low because they know that audiences at that time purely rely on the information that they give and believe in them and it is their credibility, the faith and trust of the people at stake.
Even though it was only a show, with all due respect and in all fairness, it was quite realistic if you heard it during that time. They were creative enough to produce a realistic work that's almost entirely deceiving. Two thumbs-up for their creative ideas that they used the usual way of reporting and acting it out like delivering normal information, made it sound realistic; for the people behind the 'breaking news' effect and the 'live interviews' drama, they were really good especially in radio acting. Plus, the news itself was something new during that time, something they never heard before - added with innovations and much creativity, it came as no surprise that their deceiving attempt was successful and the show easily captured the attention of the listeners, moreover, affected them.
Truly, the 1938 broadcast of HG Wells' War of the Worlds by the Mercury Theater proved how powerful media was. And yes, it still is or more powerful now, even. The media provides us with the vital information that we need to know. Although there may be chances of alterations and the like, the media is still considered as one of the most reliable sources. Especially now that the Television has been invented and there's proof because we are able to see the actually events happening live, we easily believe in what they show us. But still, there are also new innovations in ways to alter videos and the like that can easily deceive us. I'm not against media and I'm not saying that media is not credible and that we shouldn't believe in them or what they report to us are altered and untrue. All I'm trying to point out is that, as viewers we should responsible enough to decide what to believe. We shouldn't purely rely on one source alone now that we have other resources but we should try to investigate on our own. Media will continue to do their job in reporting what's happening around us, it may be true or not - it is up to us, the viewers to decide what to believe.

Information Revolution
In the current media situation that we are experiencing today, we are still uncontented with what media has to offer. The people behind every movie, radio and tv station and every medium of media continue to explore for new ways of innovating their work. They always aim for something new and fresh that would capture the interest of the viewers. Indeed, this industry never stops but continues to improve and evolve through time. I believe that it is a good thing that media continues to search for improvement, but I also believe that the viewers must also appreciate the hardwork of the people who tries so hard to provide good entertainment for us and value what we have now.
It has been a long way, before we had the chance experience the forms of entertainment we enjoy today. And learning what media has been through and how it evolved made me appreciate what we sometimes take for granted. Although it is truly their aim to provide quality entertainment, what they give should also be appreciated. People are getting harder to please nowadays and they tend to expect too much from media. We sometimes overlook their efforts and look down upon their work. Viewers should try to stop for a while and take time to take a step back - to know the tough road media has been through.
A series of attempts, a mixture of failures and success - this would perfectly describe the Information Revolution.
One thing I admire most is the undying perseverance of the people behind this industry. The continuous search for improvement, bringing out the best in people in this industry. Talents, efforts, bright ideas - never ending just to produce something unique and creative.
In a world where nothing is permanent but change. The taste of people change, their interest changes as well, nothing stays stagnant. As for media, continues to dance along with the beat to keep track with the constant change in this world. A never ending search for improvement for the entertainment of all.

Reflective Journal Post 1: PBB Fiasco

I'm not really a PBB fan, I don't even watch it but this entry would be about the PBB issue. Honestly, I'm annoyed about the whole thing that's why I chose to write about it for my reflective journal. I just don't get it why people are so affected with the people trapped inside that house when they are not even related to them and they talk about it, 24/7 like it's a national issue or something relevant in they're own lives. What irritates me the most is that even at home, my family talks about it NON-STOP. Argh. And so, because of them I'm also updated about the happenings inside 'the Bahay ni Kuya'. I heard about the recent issue about the email regarding the votes being altered and stuff, and that Cristy Fermin was the one who blurted out the so-called, 'truth'. And after reporting such news, they would take back they're word then deny it. Why would a 'Kapamilya' employee do such a thing? She would risk her own source of bread and butter and credibility just for the sake of revealing the truth? Oh c'mon! That would be bullshit. Why would ABS-CBN let such an incident happen and reveal such vital information if they know that it would be harmful to them? That's like committing suicide for the entire company. It was discussed in our CA class that media is always bias. And in this situation, I can say that it really is. On the surface, people may say that the whole issue may have caused danger for the show and the company but underneath there's a purpose for this outbreak. This news instensified the intrigues, causing more and more controversies; making the show more interesting for the viewers. The more issues, the more people talk about it. And then they say that people should vote wisely and that people vote 'to save' a housemate not to eliminate. But they keep this Wendy girl in the big four, to trigger conflicts inside the house. But the people wants her out, of course what should the people do? VOTE. And who earns loads of money whenever the people vote, the company ABS-CBN. As discussed in class, media always has a reason - a purpose for showing something. They didn't let this news out just for nothing or they want to ruin the public's trust in them, there's a hidden agenda. There's a reason behind all this, and I can say that the people behind this are really smart enough to pull off such gimmick, smart enough to play tricks with the people's minds. This only shows that this business really requires a creative mind and the whole issue only proves how powerful media can be, it can really alter the people's beliefs... even change lives. All I hope is that, the people in this business would use the power that they have in order to improve the people's lives not only to improve their own. And that the viewers would be critical enough to judge what to believe and follow.
